We believe in the power of the story. So, here are three facts about storytelling for you. And for those of you who are science based, this is all backed up with scientific evidence!
1. When someone is telling a story a certain part of their brain lights up. And it’s the exact same part of the brain that lights up in the listener. This results in synchronicity which is powerful to say the least. Being on the same wavelength is exactly what you should be aiming for.
2. Good storytelling triggers the brain into releasing cortisol which enables humans to focus and it grabs the listeners attention. The second chemical is oxytocin which enables empathy. It helps our listeners to relate to us. Both are very useful when you’re hoping to persuade or build a relationship.
3. Lastly, the greatest storytellers of all time dedicate 65% of their story to the emotional narrative of ‘why’ their product or business came into being and what their vision, mission and the problem their idea solves. The rest will contain facts and credibility. Problem is, most people dedicate the majority of their story to their background experience and their credibility, and this doesn’t move people. Why? Because it is perfunctory. So frankly, it is boring. When we tell our story it is important for us to be passionate, interesting, entertaining and inspiring!!
